I found this beautiful mushroom, a Cortinarius violaceus, while walking the CT along the Piney River in Rhea County late in September of 2009. It was uprooted and lying on its side. Fortunately, there was a second specimen a few feet away in excellent condition, so I felt free to take the uprooted one home to identify and photograph. My wife Carol took the photo and did most of the research. Its identity was confirmed by staff members of the Tennessee Dept. of Environment and Conservation. The field guides say that this species is widespread but rare, except in a few locations such as the old-growth conifer forests on Mt. Rainier in Washington. More locally, specimens have been found in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

To get more out of your hike on the CT, always be alert for unusual flora and fauna. There's a good chance that you'll discover some unexpected treasure, just as I did.

This photo of Imodium Falls was taken on 12 January 2010 after a week of freezing weather. These falls are located on Possum Gorge segment of Cumberland Trail about half way between Heiss Mountain Road Trailhead and Retro Hughes Trailhead.
