POPULAR SMOKY MOUNTAIN SEGMENT DAY HIKES

Cross Mountain:

There is gravel road access to the top of Cross Mountain to arrange car shuttles for day hikes. Turn left at the Shoney's in Caryville and follow Caryville Mountain Road to the crest of Cross Mountain. At the intersection at the top of the mountain (GPS: N36 17.550 W84 15.097), make a sharp right turn onto a dirt/gravel road (there's a sign for U.S. Coal Mine #4 and Royal Blue TWRA Sign). Travel 9/10 mile to a clearing on the right side of the road (GPS: N36 17.860 W84 15.871), and an old jeep road on the right. You may park vehicles at this location and, bearing right down the dirt road, walk 200 yards down the road to intersect the trail at mile 3.7. Look hard for the crossing.

Anderson Mountain:

Follow directions for Norma Road trailhead and continue 2.2 miles on Norma Road until you come to the Mine #10 gravel road on the left. This road is across from a coal washing facility and marked with a TWRA sign. Go up the mountain and continue on the road until you come to a sharp switchback and the road starts to climb again, there will be a pull-off area in the switchback on the left (GPS: N36 17.994 W84 19.522). At this switchback, there are two ATV dirt roads and a gravel road on the left which goes downhill. Take the gravel road until you come to a gate (GPS: N36.364 W84 19.873). This is the Anderson Mountain lower field. Parking is available by the gate, do not block the gate. From the Norma Road trail crossing to this gate, it is approximately 5.71 miles. To access the trail, walk across the field in a northern direction keeping the “high wall” to your right and the trail will be at the tree line. Look for the CT sign post at the edge of the field. At this location, the trail can be taken northeast back to Cove Lake or southwest to the New River.
